Scrum Assessment Discussion > Optimal Team Size > Define 'Team'

Asking for the optimal Team size is always somewhat tricky as it needs to be clear if the complete Scrum Team is concerned or the Team of Developers.
The Scrum Guide says: "The optimal size for a Team is seven people, plus or minus two.", referring to the Scrum Team.
In the PSM I assessment the question undeniably refers to the "Team (of Developers)" but has the same answer, i.e. 7 +/- 2.
I remember the same from the Open Assessment, by the way.

Tricky. The Guide does say that the Team has seven people, plus or minus two, referring only to the Team of developers. The Scrum Team consists of the ScrumMaster, Product Owner, and the Team. This is vastly confusing, because the phrase Team if often misconstrued to mean Scrum Team.
I tried to undo this confusion by asking everyone what they though of calling the Team the Developers (or, Team of Developers). The storm was incredible, as the progammers once again asserted that only they were developers. QA, Design, Analysis, Documentation were all something else.
So, I left the confusion in place and will fight this fight at a a later day.
Regrets, but best,
Ken

Ken, it seems you are right. I was convinced that the Scrum Guide defined 7 +/- 2 for the Scrum Team, but after a better look at it, it turns out that it is in fact the Team that is being referred to.
I guess that referring to the "Scrum Team" on the one hand, and "Team" on the other hand, at least when you have some knowledge of Scrum, can do.

Regards,
Gunther
