Essay type questions are only for PSPO 2 and PSM 3.
If you read old post, you will see essay type question for PSM 2 because PSM 2 was rename as PSM 3 and the new PSM 2 intermediate certificat was inserted.

I just passed PSM 2 today. The books I read and recommend are:

“Scrum – A Pocket Guide” by Gunther Verheyen <= really valuable, concise with a lot of info. Reads like a more elaborate version of the scrum guide itself. Must read i.m.o.

"Coaching Agile Teams" by Lyssa Adkins <= It's important to think in terms of how you should behave / act with respect to teams and people. A lot of reasoning that you need for PSM 2 comes down to this. Probably any agile coaching book would do the trick though I guess.

"Large-Scale Scrum: More with LeSS" by Criag Larman <= A bunch of questions about scaling scrum, the principles are important, e.g. 1 product backlog for multiple teams. Again, probably any book about a scrum scaling style would do.

In summary, PSM 1 contained a lot of 'rule' questions with clear correct/wrong answers and a bunch of questions with multiple 'possible/semi-correct' answers. PSM 2 contains almost solely the latter type. That's why it becomes way important to reason in terms of why(!) scrum framework rules are the way they are and keep the scrum values in mind.

I made it through the PSM1 a couple weeks ago. I intend to go ahead and take the PSM 2 so I could secure better job chances. I am not very experienced but I believe with thorough studies, I will be able to make it. Can someone in the same shoes as me encourage me? Most posts I have read say that it is almost an impossibility without experience. How true is this?

Hi Isidore,

I absolutely understand that you re doing this to help your career chances, and that is a worthy goal.

That said, do you believe that a future employer will hire you on a certificate alone? I'm not saying you shouldn't do the exam, but from what I have read the PSM 2 tests what you would do in certain situations, and if you don't have the experience of working as a Scrum Master you may be at a severe disadvantage.

Good luck in whatever you do.

Hi Stephen Syke. Thanks for your advice. I really do appreciate it. I will be patient and gather some more experience before going in for the PSM 2. Have a good day.

I have given the PSM II last year and failed with 75%. Questions were more based on case studies and it tests your experience as SM. So, i started working to gain more experience and handle the real life problems. More important is keep testing your own knowledge/skills and continuously improve. I would confess that I started my learning for certifications and now end up improving myself as SM. So, don't think certification will make you a better SM rather being better SM will enable you to crack any assessments.

Good Luck !!

Main tip I can give on the exam itself is to read the question, and than read it again. But this time, filter out what they are actually asking. There is noise informating in the questions.

Hello Isidore:

It is great to be here. I am an Enthusiast exploring the Scrum world. Please could you share your experience at the PSM I outing? Let me know how you approached and passed the exams.

Cheers.

After successfully completing PSM I and understanding the scrum in detail made me passionate about Scrum. I want to take my journey to the next level by doing PSM II and later PSM III. Need suggestion from experts about how to proceed with my goal, what books to read, what material to go through.

12:36 pm August 27, 2020

I prepared for PSM 2 by searching for and reading articles by Barry Overeem, Stephanie Ockerman, and Gunther Verheyen and revising my PSM I, PSPO I, and PAL materials. Basically, understand how scrum values are applied to the read world, so it is equally good to have some practical experience.

Today I passed PSM II in first attempt. Level of difficulty of Questions is definitely high than PSM I

If anyone has given PSM I then definitely it helps but I would suggest following approach

1) Open assessments for PSM I, PSPO I and nexus open

2) Scrum guide

3) use blogs/articles recommended by scrum.org. Dont read random article as it may not help

4) Mock tests - This is just to get a feel of questions. No mugging. I took Udemy mock tests and they were really good.

4) USE YOUR MIND AND EXPERIENCE - this is very important as almost all questions as based on real life scenarios. So there is no theoretical questions

5) Take a test with confidence. You will pass

Hi Tobias,

Indeed will be good to connect and get prepared for PSM 2.

I cleared my PSM 2 with 100% in my first attempt. I followed all the recommended reading pages in scrum.org, took the open assessments and read the pocket scrum guide by Gunther and scrum insights for practitioners by Hiren Doshi. As the exam questions are mostly scenario based, application of scrum plays a key role in passing the exam.
