Flipped Learning Edition

Learn Professional Scrum and How to be a Better Scrum Master

Professional Scrum Master™ (PSM) is an interactive, activity-based course where students gain a strong understanding of Professional Scrum and the accountabilities of the Scrum Master.  Through a combination of self-study and live online discussions and exercises, students develop a deep understanding of the underlying principles of Scrum and the Agile mindset while learning the practices of successful Scrum Teams.

The course includes up to two free attempts at the globally recognized Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) certification exam.

Flipped Learning Edition

This class is based on the Flipped Learning delivery format. The class is split into four blocks over four weeks. Each block consists of a self-study part where students use provided material (videos, articles, and quizzes) to learn and reflect on the theory of Professional Scrum, and then get together afterward on Zoom once a week for four hours with their peers and their Professional Scrum Trainer to deepen the learning via group exercises and discussions.

Benefits of Flipped Learning:

  • Consuming content in small iterations helps learning stick
  • Multiple reflection cycles make the practical application of learning more impactful
  • Variations of learning environments cater better to personal learning styles
  • Lifetime access to all study materials

Learning Block 2 - The Scrum Framework

Self Study - March 4 - March 9, 2023

After building a solid foundation from block 1, students will explore the Scrum framework in block 2. Students also explore the Definition of Done before testing their knowledge of the Scrum framework with a quiz.

Instructor-led Classroom - March 10, 2023

Students reflect on their Scrum knowledge. Block 2 finishes with a deeper dive into the Definition of Done and what it means to deliver a Done Increment in their context.

Learning Block 3 - Product Delivery with Scrum

Self Study - March 11 - 16, 2023

Halfway through the course, and students individually reflect on their insights so far before continuing on their learning journey toward understanding valuable product delivery using Scrum. Instructor-led Classroom - March 17, 2023

  • 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM PDT
  • 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM EDT

Time for questions, review and to put learning in practice. Students work through a case study during which they will build and refine a Product Backlog using techniques for sizing and ordering. Students will dig deeper into forecasting, planning and reporting with Scrum.

Learning Block 4 - People and Teams, The Scrum Master

Self Study - March 18 - March 23, 2023

What truly motivates people? What do self-managing teams look like and how can the Scrum Master help teams on their journey towards self-management? What are the accountabilities of a Scrum Master? What choices does a Scrum Master have in serving the team and organization towards greater agility? A great collection of videos are available to students to answer these and many other questions. And as the course is nearing to the end, it will be a good opportunity for students to test their knowledge with the Scrum Open assessment to identify gaps in understanding to take to the final classroom session.

Instructor-led Classroom - March 24, 2023

  • 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM PDT
  • 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM EDT

Students reflect on their new knowledge to explore what the characteristics of a great team are. Students are presented with some common real-life challenges that Scrum teams and organizations face when it comes to organizing Scrum Teams. This is followed by a deep dive on the Scrum Master services to the Scrum Team and the wider organization. The self-study finishes with an exploration of the Scrum Master as a true leader, and the stances a Scrum Master may choose to take.

The final classroom session closes with some final preparation for the Professional Scrum certification.
