Professional Scrum Master

Wellington, December 17-18, 2019

Class Overview

The Professional Scrum Master (PSM) course provides information and tools you can use to ensure that Scrum is understood and well enacted by your team. This course covers Scrum basics, including the framework, mechanics and roles of Scrum. It also teaches how to use Scrum to optimise value, productivity and the total cost of ownership of software products. Students learn through instruction and team-based exercises and are challenged to think on their feet to better understand what to do when they return to their workplaces.

Ken Schwaber initially designed the PSM course in 2009 as a significant update of the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) course he created in 2002. Since 2009, the PSM course has been maintained and regularly enhanced by Scrum.org through contributions from Ken and those of other experts in the Scrum.org network of Professional Scrum Trainers.

Scrum.org maintains the defined curriculum and materials for the Professional Scrum Master course and selects only the most qualified instructors to deliver this course. Each instructor brings his or her individual experiences and areas of expertise to bear, but all students learn the same core course content. This improves their ability to pass the Professional Scrum Master assessments and apply Scrum in their workplaces.

AGENDA

This two-day course covers:

  • Scrum Theory and Principles: how Scrum principles tie back to the empirical nature of Scrum and how they are fundamentally different from those of more traditional software development approaches. We also cover the impact that transparency brings and requires and how Scrum is best used to increase an organisation’s agility
  • People and Teams: Scrum Teams are self-organising and cross-functional – very different from traditional development groups. We delve into the people aspect of Scrum, how to work with people and how Scrum Teams are formed. We discuss tools and ideas to get Scrum teams going and guide them along the way, and help them continuously self-develop to become successful through better collaboration
  • The Scrum Master: Scrum Masters are servant-leaders with skills and tools to coach teams and organisations in understanding and applying Scrum. They master several techniques for coaching, conversation and facilitation in order to help people, teams and organisations discover what works best for them. Being a Scrum Master requires specific skills and traits. The overall behaviour of a Scrum Master is very different from a project manager or team leader in a traditional environment
  • Scrum at Large: identifying waste and possible scaling options within a team to increase the effectiveness of the team in delivering releasable software. How a Scrum Master can guide an organisation in scaling to multiple Scrum Teams working on one software product and in aligning development on product lines or multiple interconnected products

ASSESSMENT AND CERTIFICATION

Unlike other Scrum certifications that require only class attendance, Scrum.org certification requires a minimum score on a rigorous assessment. The Professional Scrum Master course has two associated assessments with two levels of certification – PSM I and PSM II. While these assessments are available to the public for purchase, if you complete the Professional Scrum Master course, you will receive a password to take the PSM I assessment once. If you pass this assessment, you will receive the industry-recognised PSM I certification and your name will be posted on this website.
