When I'm not helping teams and organizations tackle their business challenges, you'll find me on the racetrack as a motorcycle instructor. This dual perspective has taught me that both worlds operate on the same fundamental cycle: Observe, Orient, Decide, Act—the OODA Loop.
On the race track, mastering this loop requires specific disciplines:
Observe yourself with radical self-inspection and objective telemetry—not gut feeling. You become a scientist: executing actions while simultaneously observing what you did. This is the foundation for mastery. Attention is your most valuable resource—automate routine tasks to preserve mental capacity for critical decisions. Mental calm despite high speed is essential; sensory overload destroys accuracy.
Orient by treating errors as datapoints, not failures. Agile frameworks are game rules that enable creativity within constraints. Lack of clarity is expensive—it creates panic and quality loss. Focus on the racing line (flow) rather than speed (output). Races are won in corners, not straights—bottlenecks define performance.
Decide through micro-adjustments, not big transformations. One-percent corrections compound over time. Preparation creates optionality—when you've thought through scenarios, you meet situations with freedom and calm. Sustainable rhythm beats momentary performance.
Act through collaborative high-performance execution—like a pit stop where seconds come from precision and role clarity. Motorcycles don't make mistakes—riders do. Conscious action, not 'following process,' is required. Avoid oversteering; too much action destroys stability. Then debrief every session—mastery comes from understanding your behavior and how to change it.
The faster a rider cycles through this loop with these disciplines, the more competitive they become.
Agile teams follow exactly the same pattern: observe as scientists, treat frameworks as enabling constraints, create optionality through preparation, act consciously with clear roles, and conduct Retrospectives as non-negotiable routines.
I've spent 15 years mastering agile frameworks—from Scrum and Kanban to SAFe. I don't just train these approaches; I work hands-on as a consultant, spending equal time in the trenches with teams facing real-world challenges. This keeps my teaching grounded in practice, not just theory. I apply this knowledge as a Professional Scrum Trainer, Scrum Master, Kanban Coach, and SAFe Program Consultant. My technical background in electronics, medical technology, and IT consulting provides the foundation. The racetrack provides the edge.
Speed of learning wins—on the track and in product development.
