The five different phases of design thinking are more like modes that contribute to developing a product in a project, rather than sequential steps.

Empathize: Understanding the needs and impact on the end user.

Define: Re-framing and clarify the problem with the users.

Ideate: Openly generate creative ideas in brainstorming sessions with different types of users.

Prototype: Adopting a hands-on approach to rapid prototyping.

Test:  Develop and implement the identified solution and assess results by getting feedback from all the users.

There are 3 ways to gather data about your users in order to develop an empathetic understanding of their experiences:

• Immerse and experience what your user experiences by becoming a user by stepping into their shoes to understand his problems clearly.

Observe their behavior and the context and infer what they think and feel during their interaction with the product.

Engage with users by conducting one -on-one unbiased interviews and asking open ended questions.

Creating User Personas and understanding what they do for all the different types of users interacting with a system  - helps create a better understanding of how a product needs to work effectively with different types of users in an application.

Different type of users should be interviewed so that they way they interact with the system can be documented so that their behaviors' are well understood when a solution is being developed.

Using this methodology: generating ideas to solve the problem, creating personas and positioning matrix to see which idea fits the different personas Design thinking offers us a means of digging deeper into the user’s life to uncover ways of improving user experiences by building a better user-friendly effective product. best, there is less chance of failure in projects as the best idea per all the different users and their needs are considered before solutioning.
