Team members treating Scrum ceremonies as optional

I have a development team member who does not attend the daily scrum.  I have expressed the importance of the meeting and how their update benefits the team.

In your experience, what are some ways to drive home the importance and to convince the individual their attendance and updates are indeed important?

How does one get the Team to chime in?

How effectively does he or she collaborate with others during the rest of the day?

@Henry Gabaldon, can you tell us how your daily scrum is conducted? Have you been able to indentify why the DT member does not feel like attending the event?

I have similar questions to the people above.

The answers you want all depend on the reason the DT member is missing the daily scrum. Are they too busy? Don’t see any value? Someone who is just not committed to the team (sadly)?
