Dear All,

I have a devops team meaning 3 ops and 3 part time  devlopers who do CR fixing..

They have huge incident backlog of 100 odd incidents and every day they get 40   incidents.

They tried scrum .They felt that team is overburdened because of  over working.

As part of sprint planning, they used to track mainy the CR .They used to take alot of work which means almost 75% cr is done

However, the goal of leadership is to reduce the incidents.

After analysis, i felt that they are over commiting and theyare not really able to manage coz the CRs get added in between the sprints  .

So we thought of making it scrumban meaning will priotrize the work on a weekly basis and see how it runs.Still we flow the kind of 2 week cadence as we are part of ART.

The whole goal is to ensure that they are focussed and complete what they take based on tbeir capacity.

Do it is a good idea to go with.

Thanks,

Kavitha K

Have you considered why the team is overburdening themselves? What can they do to focus more on outcomes rather than outputs and how can the management and leadership help the Development Team in achieving that?

Yes I did. They are not able to plan their work according to their capacity as there are lot of adhoc tasks  that  comes on their way. There are lot of dependencies in the environments which are under migration and are handled by different teams , the dev teams have to depend on the support persons as they cant connect to the user directly and they cant be given direct access due to compliance issues.

The team does a lot of multi tasking as well due to dependencies , trying to reprodue the bug in test.

So, want to ensure that they are focussed by putting a WIP limit and complete the same.

Thanks,

Kavitha K

However, the goal of leadership is to reduce the incidents.

Are they satisfied that the Definition of Done is appropriate for the organization?

The first step in reducing incidents is to stop them arising in the first place. That often means a team has to stop bailing for a while in order to plug the hole.
