[2 Mins FAQ] Can One Person Be Both The Scrum Master And The Product Owner?

July 3, 2020

What’s up awesome people. I hope you had a great week and ready for the weekend. Starting from today, I am going to start a new series on my channel which I will call the 2 minutes FAQ series. In this series, I will answer the frequently asked questions that I have received whether in my Scrum.org Professional Scrum trainings or when I am engaged in the community meetups in just two minutes.

The first question that I will answer in this series is: Can one person be both the Scrum Master and the Product Owner?

Do you have any question that I most likely can answer in 2 minutes for this series? Just leave a comment down below and let’s see if your suggestion can make it to the next video. See you until my next video. Stay safe and Scrum On.

Joshua,
Thank you, nicely done. In general, I find that the lack of focus is one of the great “tragedies” in the workplace today. Unfortunately, I think it is a direct result of measuring success based on speed and doing more versus focusing (pun intended) on quality. I also find that agile touts that being a generalist is "better" than being a specialist. BTW, I’m on a scrum team, where the PO also plays the role of development team ☹.

Straight forward my answer is no. Scrum master and product owner both having different roles, and as per my understanding only 20% work is common to both.

Yes, product owner can be a part of developmental work, and be a part of dev team.

Totally agree with you. I myself, rather be a product owner. I believe the historic role of Project director in a waterfall environment is closer to a Product owner than to a Scrum Master y an agile environment. As a consultant, I use to have in my waterfall projects the role of change management which is certainly closer to a Scrum Master.

Thanks for sharing your experience @disqus_OtfQziawBw:disqus :) Yeah. Lack of focus is one of the problems we have in the industry. Companies do not value mastery and prefers generalists.

Thank you for your explanation. I have one question, Who will lead the Daily Stand up, if I have a new Development Team, which doesn't have many experience an agile methodology?

Scrum does NOT forbid people holding more than 1 accountability. It can often cause many problems as the video explains, but sometimes it may be appropriate for very small teams.
if you can be PO and a Developer, their no reason why you can't be a Both The Scrum Master And The Product Owner too
