The Agile Journey: From Origins to Agile 2.0

December 25, 2023

Since 2001, Agile has undergone a significant transformation. Initially envisioned as a way to decentralize and democratize work processes, its journey has been anything but straightforward. I've seen, firsthand, how organisations have struggled to fully embrace Agile's core principles. Often, there's a tendency to revert to hierarchical, command-and-control structures, which runs counter to the Agile ethos.

The emergence of Agile 2.0 and the concept of 'rewilding' Agile are responses to these challenges. They represent a collective effort to return to Agile's foundational ideas – moving away from monolithic and standardized processes that inhibit innovation and adaptability. This is not just about adopting new practices; it's about fundamentally rethinking how we approach work in a dynamic, ever-changing market environment.

A key issue I've observed is the disillusionment with Agile. Often, it's not Agile that's failing; it's the implementation. There's a gap between the theory and the practice, and this has led to a sense of scepticism and fatigue around Agile terms and concepts. The future of Agile, as I see it, lies in embracing its underlying principles – empiricism, self-organisation, decentralisation, and democratisation. We need to shift our focus from merely adopting Agile labels to truly living Agile values.
