Product Owner vs Product Manager - What’s the Difference?

September 7, 2023

Scrum has an accountability called “Product Owner”, but you’ll also come across people with the title of “Product Manager”. Are they the same thing? Related to each other? Is one better than the other?

In this Responsive Advisors Scrum Lightning Round, Robert Pieper, Jason Malmstadt, and I will shed some light on this confusing topic.

This discussion about PO and/vs PM is unnecessary in my opinion and specially the 2 discussed here:
- PM is waterfallish and PO is agile
- who is more important "Manager" or "Owner"

I have worked with good PMs who are adaptive, collaborative, focused, evidence driven and poor PO who are rigid, micromanaging, plan driven &.... vice versa, so these naming and title hardly matters

This blog post is not intended to discuss the mindset of individuals that we have collaborated with in the past... many of us have worked with "good" and "bad" POs and PMs. It is meant to address the purpose of the roles. Scrum does not ask us to manage the product and the teams, but rather to own the complete value delivery.
