[VLOG] When The Scrum Product Owner Comes Up with Unplanned Work In The Middle Of The Sprint

Hey. What is good awesome people? I hope you had an awesome week and ready for the weekend. Whoop whoop. After my previous vlog, many developers asked me: "What should we do if the Product Owner comes up with unplanned work or work that was not discussed during Sprint Planning in the middle of the Sprint?". This is quite common when running a business. I usually ask two simple questions to the Product Owner whenever situation happens. I hope today's vlog helps those of you who face this situation. Nice Article. It’s a very common in every large organizations. Here is my two cents, DT should observe the unplanned work. INSPECT: How much unplanned work is coming in the middle of the sprint ADPACT: During the next sprint keep that much capacity as buffer and can be negotiated with PO.
For example in a sprint of 100% capacity work, 80% planned work and 20% is unplanned work. There are 5 PBI are selected in Sprint Backlog worth of 100% DT capacity and each PBI worth of 20% capacity of the total capacity of the team. Sprint cadence is 2 weeks. After a week, if PO comes with unplanned work and discuss with DT. Transparency & Visibility: DT will provide their current work status with respect to the sprint goal.
From the 5 PBI’s from Sprint Backlog- 2 PBI – Done , 1 PBI - in progress and 2 PBIs – Not Yet Started .
The unplanned work is worth of 20% of their capacity. DT team will negotiate with PO and ask PO to prioritize the PBI’s 2 pending PBI from the Sprint Backlog and 1 new PBI from unplanned work together. DT can accommodate only 2 PBI’s based on the available capacity.

In Scrum, buffer should not be a solution. It just cover up the real problem in the organisation hence lack of transparency.
