Career change

Need some advice on career changes.

I'm roughly 12 years in my career.

  • Y1-Y7 Did not practice Scrum or work in any development team. The work I did was quite distant from Agile.
  • Y8-Y12 led a 3-member development team practicing Scrum.

I'm thinking about getting a new job as a Scrum Master in a larger team. My concern is that my previous 7 years of experiences in non-related fields (Sales and Digital Marketing) might hinder my chance of landing a job.

So,

  • For a job requiring "5 years of scrum master experience", does recruiter mainly look for people in their late 20s, or previous non-related experiences are also welcome?
  • Have you guys experienced a similar career change?

Any advice is appreciated.

Job descriptions are guidelines, which are usually not set in stone. It's impossible to know if the recruiter is looking for a specific level in terms of overall career experience until you apply and get an initial conversation going.

My suggestion is to continue building on your Scrum Master experience at your current company, continue learning through real-world experience, get certified, then expand your horizon and see what else is available in the market.
