Hello All,

I have a query on Retrospective. One team member says, retrospective is boaring and not interested to discuss on the improvements. As a Scrum Master in a team, how would he/she handle this situation, so that other team members should not be effected. The team is already had a Scrum training and experience enough to understand Scrum and they are also in to 60th sprint.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Regards,

Fyrose

If it is boring, the SM needs to find ways to make it interesting. Add some games to it, make it more fun. Ask the team member if they feel the team is perfect and doesn't need to improve upon anything. They will answer NO because there is no way a team can be perfect. Therefore, improvements are a must. The best way to find what needs to be improved upon is by discussing it as a team.

I've found that some people respond more positively to 'fun' retrospectives than others. I've had teammates who dislike games, and want serious, consistently structured retrospectives. Some like retrospectives to be very short. Others appreciate the opportunity to have long conversations.

Sometimes boredom is caused by a lack of relevance. Do retrospectives result in meaningful change? Does the team hold itself accountable for carrying out improvements or experiments that it agreed in previous retrospectives, and then look back at the impact these changes had? Do your retrospectives sound like what is described in the Scrum Guide?

Have you asked why the team member is bored? Have you asked other team members what they think of the retrospectives? Open questions, rather than yes/no, may provide you the best possible feedback.

How would you react if the team tell you that they think you should do a better job of making retrospectives enjoyable?

Have you explained the reason for having a retrospective?

Would you be willing to let this team member lead one retrospective (in any way they choose)?

+100 Simon. One of the best ways to get people who complain to stop complaining is by putting them on the spot and switch places with them.

How good is teamwork outside of the Retrospective? Do team members collaborate extensively enough to have a shared process in which everyone can take an interest?
