Can we use Use cases instead of user stories in Sprint

My customer is coming up with use cases , and is not really interested in converting them to use cases . That being said even if the team comes up with user stories there may not be any signoff on those from the PO . In this scenario , is user story a must ? or can we still track items using use cases. 

This included both function and technical requirements.

Scrum doesn't specify the format of the Product Backlog Items. Use Cases, User Stories, or something else entirely - it's all good. As long as the work in the Product Backlog can be ordered and the Development Team is capable of understanding the size of the work for the purposes of Sprint Planning, the format doesn't matter at all.

How will the use cases be refined? Do the team understand what it means for a use case to be “ready” for Sprint Planning?
