It is about the basics I would say. Improving your effectiveness as a Scrum Master for a distributed team is mostly about getting communication right—using the right communication channels, shared repositories, dashboards, and visual online boards. It helps to establish clear communication norms and make sure tools are easy to use and everybody know which tool to use. It is frustrating if some people cannot hear others speak—try to avoid this situation.
Transparency is essential, so the shared boards and dashboards are important to keep team information (sprint goal, blockers, and progress) visible to everyone. Strong working relationships matter even more when people are remote, so it’s worth investing time in trust-building, regular check-ins, and informal conversations. Be mindful of time zones when scheduling ceremonies, and use tools that allow collaboration to keep meetings engaging and inclusive. In the end, as with co-located teams, helping the team self-manage and let them take ownership of their process is what really leads to success. The same is true of distributed teams.
