AI Agent vs. Agentic AI

AI Agent

An AI Agent is a SINGULAR system or program designed to perceive its environment, make decisions, and take actions to achieve specific goals, often without continuous human intervention.

Example: An AI Agent monitors incoming support emails to discover new feature requests and adds them to the Product Backlog on another tool like Jira, Azure DevOps, ...

Agentic AI

Agentic AI is the THINKING PROCESS of how to do the work, where AI systems can break down complex problems, plan, use tools, and act in a loop, often involving multiple steps or even multiple agents working together.

Example: An Agentic AI system that launches a marketing campaign where it manages and handles all the required steps:

  • Researches the market
  • Creates copy
  • Schedules posts
  • Monitors results and adjusts

You see, this Agentic AI system manages the whole process of launching the marketing campaign, where for each step it uses a specialized AI Agent.

In super simple terms:

AI Agent = does the job (like a worker)
Agentic AI = decides how to do the job (like a foreman)
