Is Kanban the Creative Industry's New Normal?

March 11, 2024

I've always been captivated by the dynamics of project management within creative industries. The unique challenges and the relentless pursuit of innovation demand a philosophy that is both adaptable and respectful of the creative process. Reflecting on my experiences and observations, I've come to appreciate the role of Kanban in this context.

Kanban, with its roots deeply embedded in visual management and flow optimisation, offers a compelling approach to managing creative projects. Unlike traditional methodologies, which often impose rigid structures, Kanban embraces the fluid nature of creative work. It provides a framework that is not only flexible but also centred around continuous improvement and the philosophy of 'starting from where you are'.

One of the most profound realisations I've had is the importance of visualising work. A Kanban board, while seemingly simple, is a powerful tool for making the invisible visible. This visibility is crucial in creative environments where work often transcends physical boundaries. It fosters a shared understanding and aligns individual efforts with collective goals.

However, the journey doesn't stop at visualisation. Defining workflows, establishing work-in-progress (WIP) limits, and continuously refining processes are essential steps in realising the full potential of Kanban. These practices encourage a culture of reflection and dialogue, which is vital for creative teams striving for excellence.

Yet, the adoption of Kanban is not without its challenges. The initial step of agreeing on a shared workflow can be daunting. Creativity, by nature, is personal and diverse. Finding common ground requires patience, openness, and a willingness to embrace new ways of working together.

Key Topics:

  • Kanban's flexibility and suitability for creative industries
  • The importance of visualising work and defining workflows
  • Challenges in adopting Kanban within creative teams
  • Continuous improvement and the philosophy of starting from where you are

In light of these reflections, I find myself pondering, How can we best navigate the tension between individual creativity and the need for a shared approach to project management within creative industries? Comment below!

Throughout my career, I have been deeply immersed in the dynamic landscape of the Entertainment industry, fulfilling roles ranging from creative artist to Scrum Master / Project manager. Drawing from my extensive experience, I've come to a profound realization: Kanban methodology stands out as the optimal approach for project management within the realm of creativity.

In the multifaceted environment of the Creative industry, collaboration across various departments is integral to achieving the final output. Each department operates within a continuum of tasks, spanning from "Yet to Start" to "Work in Progress" and culminating in "Done" and "Delivered" statuses. It's akin to a relay race, where one department's completion marks the starting line for another's endeavors.

Kanban proves invaluable in this context, offering a structured framework that facilitates a clear understanding of task progression within each department. By visualizing the workflow and task statuses, Kanban empowers teams to streamline their processes, synchronize efforts, and ultimately enhance efficiency in delivering creative projects.
