What is the scrum.org opinion about Scrum Guide expansion pack by Jeff Sutherland?
I was wondering what you all make of Scrum guide expansion pack? It was released by Jeff Sutherland past July.
There was intensive discussion at LinkedIn and at the Jeff's own resource, but little attention here...
The expansion pack is built on top of Scrum like many things including Nexus, etc. We believe that Scrum is a framework for which people should build additional practices and processes on top which is what the 2 trainers who built the expansion pack did. When designing the framework, Ken has always wanted people with expertise in different areas like hardware or marketing for example to build on top of Scrum while not changing Scrum.
In the end it doesn't change Scrum and provides additional practices that you may choose to use.
That's true. In the discussions at Linkedin Jeff Satherland has expressed the ambition that some elements from expansion pack would find a way into new edition of the Scrum guide.
Is this something to consider for discussion?
Sorry to say, but I personally find the expansion pack 'cringe', especially the Definition of Outcome Done, the Definition of Output Done and the AI-section, but don't let my opinion stop anyone from implementing the expansion pack (pieces or completely).
That is the real beauty of Scrum, anyone can tailor it toward the needs of the Team/Stakeholder/Customer.
The problem is not that those elements need to be added to the Scrum Guide itself, the main problem is that most people stop at PSM I and PSPO I and miss on all the extra value that is provided by diving deeper into their paths.
- Scrum Master: PSM I, PSM II, (optional PSM III*), PSFS, SPS, PSK I, PAL I, PAL-EBM
- Product Owner: PSPO I, PSPO II, (optional PSPO III*), PSPO-AIE, SPS, PPDV, PSBMS, PAL I, PAL-EBM
- Developer: PSD I, PSU I, PSK I, SPS, PAL I, PAL-EBM
* Level III certifications are hard en expensive to obtain, although aspiring to reach this level should be a goal to persue.
I myself objected the Definition of Outcome done and Definition of Output Done at their forum discussion. I believe that current structure of three artifacts and three commitments is actually very efficient and simple at the same time.
