How the Scrum Values direct your behavior during the entire Sprint - Back to the foundations of the Scrum framework (38)

February 17, 2022

You should expect the use of Scrum to become more successful when the Team lives the Values of commitment, courage, focus, openness and respect. Then empiricism starts to work and trust is being built.

👉 The more people become proficient in living the Scrum values, the more successful the use of Scrum will be.

So far I have covered the Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Retrospective and Sprint Review. What about the Sprint itself?

  • Commitment to achieve the Sprint Goal, not necessarily the specific Product Backlog items. And achieve the improvements agreed during the latest Sprint Retrospective.
  • Have the Courage to work on items that are outside your comfort zone. You’ll help the team with it and grow yourself.
  • Focus on the work of the Sprint; to achieve the Sprint Goal. Say “No” to other work.
  • Be Open to share hard nuts immediately with the team. You can start collaborating and crack these nuts together.
  • Respect that colleagues can have a difficult day, that customers do not express their needs in your words, that managers have challenges that stress them, that ...

These are only one example of how each Scrum Value could be lived during the entire Sprint.

The Scrum Values are a guide for the Scrum Team how to behave every single day during the Sprint.

The more the team and the stakeholders become skilled in living the Scrum Values, the better the outcome of your Sprint will be.

Together with your Scrum Team, evaluate how the Scrum Values are lived during the Sprint; day after day.

How do you see that the values of Commitment, Courage, Focus, Openness and Respect are lived? What can you do to make the Scrum Team live these even better?

We hope you will find value in these short messages and if you are looking for more clarifications, feel free to take contact.

Next week we'll have a look at the Scrum Values and the impact on the Product Backlog.

👉 In March 2022 we have an exclusive in-person event in Brussels, Belgium's capital, that you might want to check out: From one Scrum team to large multi-team effective product development. 👈
