What students say about RobertAbout Robert
I’m Robert Pieper, a licensed Scrum.org Professional Scrum Trainer and founder of Responsive Advisors, a Chicago-based consulting and training firm.
I’ve been teaching Professional Scrum since 2013 and have delivered more than 300 Scrum.org classes to over 3,000 students through public and private engagements. My background includes 15 years as a professional software developer, hands-on experience as a Scrum Master and Product Owner, and formal education leading to an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering and a MBA, giving me a practical perspective that connects Scrum to real business outcomes.
I don’t teach Scrum as a collection of ceremonies or abstract theory. I teach it as a practical system for delivering value in complex, real-world organizations.
What to expect from my classes
Most people come to Scrum training because something isn’t working:
- Scrum feels heavy or ineffective
- A previous class focused on rules instead of results
- Teams and managers are under pressure to improve delivery without blowing things up
My training emphasizes:
- How Scrum actually works beyond the textbook
- Why common Scrum implementations fail and how to fix them
- The organizational behaviors that quietly undermine Scrum
- Practical decision-making for teams, managers, and leaders
Students consistently describe my classes as highly practical, engaging, and grounded in real experience, not dogma.
Me and my team at Responsive Advisors maintains a 5-star Google rating
Real-world experience, not career training
Before becoming a trainer, I worked as an engineer and software developer, then as an embedded consultant inside client organizations. I’ve also been a business owner for nearly a decade managing a team, responsible for real P&L decisions, not just hypothetical case studies.
That experience shapes how I teach. I understand the trade-offs, constraints, and political realities teams and leaders face because I’ve lived them.
Clients and experience
I’ve trained and advised teams at organizations ranging from high-growth product companies to Fortune 500 enterprises, including Walmart, Costco, Microsoft, Pfizer, John Deere, Honeywell, and Merck.

For a practical example of how I think about Scrum in real organizations, I’ve published a short video outlining common warning signs of broken or “fake” Scrum implementations.
