I put together a slide show for some co-workers, and I thought I would post it to the forum.

I hope this helps all of you out there trying to improve your knowledge of Scrum by studying for the PSM I.

I am very grateful for everyone that posts and comments on the forum as it helped me improve my understanding of Scrum and also helped me pass the PSM I. Thank you for your help!

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for you sharing, I have some comments for your slides:
1. Sprint backlog
The sprint backlog is determined during the sprint review.
--> It's not correct.
2. Daily Scrum
The Scum Master and the Development Team are the only people allowed to participate in the Daily Scrum
-->Why PO do not allowed to participate Daily scrum?

3.review question 11:
If the development team does not have all of the skills to accomplish the sprint goal, the scrum master should:
A. Cancel the sprint
B. Cancel scrum
C. Have the development team determine the definition of "Done" and work through the sprint backlog.
D. None of the above
-->Your answer key C, but I'm not sure it is the best option.

@All, Please feel free to discuss for more clear about these items.

Ba Luu Van

Thanks for reviewing my slides and the thoroughness of your review.

1. You are definitely right. I changed the slide to read:
- The Sprint Backlog is determined during the Sprint Planning.
- The Development Team modifies the Sprint Backlog throughout the Sprint, and the Sprint Backlog emerges during the Sprint.

2. From the Scrum guide (page 10): The Scrum Master enforces the rule that only Development Team members participate in the Daily Scrum.

To you question of why, in my interpretation I think it's so no one interferes with the Development Team's ability to organize and manage their own work. If anyone has any additional thoughts that would be helpful.

3. This was taken from a question asked in the forums that I though was very thought provoking (original post here: https://www.scrum.org/Forums/aft/467). I think Ian Mitchell's post says it best that the Definition of Done (DoD) should be obtainable and if the team discovers it's not the DoD should be redefined. That was my thinking on this question maybe it needs to be reworded to say: Have the development team redefine "Done" and work through the sprint backlog.

Thanks again for your input.

Hi Ryan,

I think for point 2 you had misunderstanding. Scrum-guide said "The Scrum Master enforces the rule that only Development Team members participate in the Daily Scrum.". That mean participation of Development Team is mandatory but for Scrum Master & PO is optional (allowed).

I still stand behind my response. I think the key word from the statement, "The Scrum Master enforces the rule that only Development Team members participate in the Daily Scrum" is the word only. By definition only means solely or exclusively, so participation is exclusively performed by a member of the Development Team.

I think you might be confused about the difference between attendance and participation. Others (Product Owner, stakeholders, etc.) can attend, but these others cannot participate. Again, I think this rule is in place so no one interferes with the Development Team's ability to organize and manage their own work.

Going back to my slide, I did add that the Scrum Master is allowed to participate. I added the Scrum Master, because I think it would be hard to enforce the rule above if you're not allowed to participate. Now that I'm thinking about it, I might remove the Scrum Master from that bullet point.

Development team should attend the daily scrum, the scrum master should ensure that daily scrum happens.. He need not attend it.product owner is also optional.

(i) Daily Scrum Slide: Identifying impediments to Dev Team's progress - unless its implied that the process of "inspecting the work since the last Daily Scrum" would identify the impediments. Almost all large enterprises I've worked with/in, have difficulty succeeding with Scrum (or practice Scrumbuts) due to impediments outside the Dev Team's control

(ii) Daily Scrum Slide: Only required participation in Daily Scrum is Development Team

(iii) You have a slide titled "Sprint Backlog" but the contents of the slide all relate to Increment?

(3) I agree with your answer -- The SMaster should coach the DTeam in refining the Definition of Done and go fwd with the SBacklog. The SMaster should also ensure this is discussed during the Retrospective -- since the Def. of Done was used as an input by the DTeam during Splanning to do its forecast. Obviously the DTeam underestimated the effort required to meet the Def. of Done criteria

Partho

Thanks for your input and thoroughness in reviewing my presentation.

i) Very insightful and I think it's worth mentioning so the objective is clearer. I added two bullet points to clarify the objective. The bullet points are:
- Identifying what is/was helpful for the Development Team to reach its Sprint Goal.
- Identifying impediments that might jeopardize the Sprint Goal.

ii) This goes back to my discussion above. The Development team are the only members required to participate, but is the Scrum Master also allowed to participate? I think it would be hard to enforce the rule that only Development team members are allowed to participate if the Scrum Master can't also participate him/herself. I'm definitely on the fence about this right now.

iii) Good catch! The title of the slide has been changed.

3) I hope that my explanation above helped.

Semantically speaking, its "DTeam must/reqd-to participate" versus "Smaster can participate". In many cases, (especially with new DTeams or in an organization new to Scrum) SMaster participates as a process manager/coach -- helping DTeam be consise/keep within the timebox, ensuring issues/topics are tabled for later discussions, ensuring outsiders (or even the P.O) who attend the Daily Scrum don't intervene during the event.

Hi Ryan,
I took PSM 1 exam today and passed it.wanted to thank you for putting up the slide show link here..it certainly helped me while preparing for the exam.

Cheers,

Ruchi

Ruchi

Congrats! I'm glad the slideshow helped.

I'm curious (and I'm sure others are too), what else did you do to prepare for the exam?

12:33 pm February 5, 2015

1)My main focus was to understand each and every line of the scrum guide properly(did not refer any other book)..
2)I took open assessments available on this site till I was consistent in getting 100%. It is easy to get full percentage because the questions are repeated so I sat with my senior in office who is expert in scrum and we discussed the questions in detail.
3)I was a silent reader on the forums.Going through discussions of experts on various topics certainly helped and that is how I ended up going through your slide show

Well this became too long but...I hope it helps ..

02:01 pm February 7, 2015

Which of the Open Assessment tests did you use to review your knowledge for the PSM1?

11:47 am February 9, 2015

Hi Briony

Welcome to the forum! I think your question was in response to Ruchi's post, but I think I can help you.

If you are studying for the PSM I the assessment you'll want to focus on the Scrum Open. Open assessment located here: https://www.scrum.org/Assessments/Open-Assessments/Scrum-Open-Assessment
The questions on the Scrum Open are the best representation of questions that will appear on the PSM I. Also, some of the questions in the Scrum Open are used on the PSM I.

I would also recommend taking the Developer Open and the Scrum Practitioner Open just to get some fresh questions and to broaden your studying.

Good Luck!
