Immersion Training - A Different Learning Approach

All Scrum.org courses are centered around valuable learning outcomes, achieved through hands-on learning within a classroom environment. They are most often delivered as interactive 2-day experiences.

Professional Scrum Product Owner (PSPO) Immersion Training is an alternative class format with short training sessions over eight weeks. Additionally, Immersion Training extends the learning experience beyond the classroom by enabling and encouraging you to apply what you've learned in your jobs between training sessions. This format is enhanced by incorporating facilitated reflections for improvement, making the learning experience highly effective and practical.

Elements of PSPO Immersion Training

PSPO Immersion Training classes have the following elements:

  1. Incremental Classroom Learning
  2. Outcome-Based Assignments
  3. Facilitated Reflections

"Elements of Immersion Training classes"

1. Incremental Classroom Learning

PSPO Immersion Training classes are delivered in 2.5 hour, live classroom sessions over eight weeks. Within each classroom session, you'll learn and practice a new concept. This approach offers you the opportunity to focus on and internalize learning at a sustainable pace. By breaking down the material into manageable chunks, you can gain a good understanding of each concept before progressing to the next.

2. Outcome-Based Assignments

The heart of PSPO Immersion Training lies here. Following each classroom session, you'll receive an assignment that directly applies the concepts and learning objectives covered in class. These assignments are intentionally flexible by focusing on outcomes over outputs, thus accommodating the diverse backgrounds and proficiency levels of participants. While the assignments are challenging and aspirational, the emphasis is not solely on completion. Instead, the focus is on pushing boundaries and experimenting with new approaches, while receiving guidance and support. This approach ensures that both novice and experienced learners can engage meaningfully and contribute to their respective contexts positively.

3. Facilitated Reflections

Every classroom session following the first session commences with dedicated time for students and their Professional Scrum Trainer (PST) to reflect on their experiences with the assignments. These reflections are integral to the learning process and provide a platform for you to share challenges, successes, and ask for help. Facilitated by your PST, you'll engage in constructive group discussions that foster peer learning and receive actionable feedback. Reflections are about sharing your journey and nurturing your growth through collective insights.

Who Should Participate in PSPO Immersion Training?

The application of learnings during PSPO Immersion Training is core to the concept. You should have the opportunity to work with a real team on an actual product during your participation in this program. If you do not have such an opportunity while participating in this program, you should consider attending a traditional PSPO training class.

The below characteristics of learners are generalized and intended to help guide you towards the learning method you think might suit you best.

Learners who register for a PSPO Immersion Training class:

  • Are committed to taking ownership of their learning experience which is dependent on full and active participation over an extended period of time.
  • Are committed to applying their learning and willing to conduct small experiments at work throughout the learning experience.
  • Find it easier to fit a 2.5 hour classroom session once a week into their schedule and independently focus on inter-session assignments.
  • Learn best by doing.
  • Prefer to gain knowledge, practice in a safe environment, then apply and reflect.
  • Want to learn enough to try something quickly, then inspect and adapt to improve and grow.

Learners who register for a PSPO traditional class:

  • Are committed to taking ownership of their learning experience which is dependent on full and active participation over a short period of time.
  • Find it easier to fully focus on the class and learning for two consecutive days.
  • Prefer to learn as much as possible in a condensed time-frame.
  • Learn best through discussions and conversations with their peers and instructor.
  • Want to gain a broad understanding of the subject and use it as a foundation for further independent learning.

PSPO Immersion Training Agenda

PSPO Immersion Training is a mix of lecture, case studies and interactive exercises as you collaborate with other students during classroom sessions plus assignments which are not part of a traditional PSPO course. These assignments are aligned with the PSPO course's learning objectives.
